Dina Karaman (b.1986) is a filmmaker, editor, archive researcher, and educator, currently based in Taipei, Taiwan.
Dina makes experimental films and installations using found footage alongside material from her own audiovisual archives. Her method is primarily based on discrepant montage techniques, where sound and image are nonsynchronized and come from different contexts and sources, fusing into new semantic forms.
In her practice, Dina also explores the phenomenon of inner cinema, which relates to mental imagery and inner sound triggered by external stimuli. Part of her focus is on developing educational programs and workshops centered around archival and found footage film, aural or imageless film, and creative thinking within group dynamics.
Dina participated in film programmes of 17th Venice Architecture Biennale; a video exhibition the view from there, Sadie Coles HQ London; Moscow International Experimental Film Festival, Message to Man Film Festival, New Holland Island International Debut Film Festival, V Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art to name a few. Her works were presented at the duo exhibition Deep Play, VT Artsalon and Greater Taipei Biennale, Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, Doc Club in Bangkok. Short film “The Nature of Dogs” (dir. Pom Bunsermvicha, Thailand), edited by Dina, was selected for the Locarno 2024, Pardi di Domani International Competition. In 2021, Dina's first fiction project, “Antisexus”, won the top prize at the pitching session of the II New Holland Island International Debut Film Festival.
