STILL LIFE(S)
with Vladimir Nadein
for Taipei Media School

We are viewing Fuhe Bridge Flea Market as a vast archive holding collective and private memories and history of Taiwan. What is the physical object and what is the difference between the image of that object? How to create a political lense to observe this living and ever changing archive? During the workshop we dig for the objects and unusual findings to imagine possible stories behind them, to find private and historical significance. We create a still life with those findings putting them into dialogue, to inspire our own collective imagination.

The deserted landscape of the new town which can be seen out of the window day after day, evokes mixed feelings between a dreamy fantasy and a suffocating imprisonment. It almost seems as if people have left this planet and only the small miniatures of builders remain continuing with the construction which they had begun. Voices of adults and children in various languages share the dreams that occurred during isolation. Some are terrifying, while others are beautiful and fantastical and open to interpretation. They are addressed to the people of the 21st century, on the brink of an apocalyptical fear ahead of the new virus.

Newsreels were one of the most powerful tools of Soviet propaganda. They also make up a significant part of the state film archives. In the newsreels, the recent past presents itself as a monolith of silent images, firmly stitched together by the narrator's voice and soundtrack subtly playing the viewer's feelings. It is exactly this original sound that the artist suggests to detach from. Just two or three minutes long episodes retain the original montage, which was meant to follow the upbeat narration. Flickering images of the past, which perhaps can only become enchanting to us today by revealing their muteness.

The experimental work was made by a collective of ten filmmakers, a generation raised in the beginning of the 90's Russia. A film pieces together found home video tapes made by their relatives from that time and a sonic trip down the memory lane to the streets of the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt in August, Moscow. The events that brought about the end of the Soviet era become the reference point for the elusive reality of the next decade, documented by the people of the new country with their home cameras.

The Republic is an unsettling pastoral about the Crimean Peninsula, where three layers of archival material, recent footage, and live musical score interweave into a disturbing narrative.

The tranquillity of empty, shimmering landscapes captured by an unknown cameraman in the 1990s is rudely interrupted every now and then by the imperious voice of a professor of the Moscow Conservatory reaching out from 1986. The brusque instructions are delivered to the pensive flute of a modern composer, which tactfully falls silent, refusing to follow the professor's guidance. As if witnesses to this struggle, the ghosts of the legendary Soviet Young Pioneer camp Artek emerge from beyond the moonlit sparkle of the boundless sea of our days.

What Sound Reminds You of Home
A cinematographic journey to that very unique time when many Russians got their first palmcorders along with their first opportunity to go on family vacation abroad. Roads, hotels, shops, water parks and cafes - everything was equally impressive and everything was saved on VHS tapes for home archives. At the same time, somewhere on the other side of the Earth the fishermen who go out to the northern seas for a long time, also take a video camera with them for the very first time.
